Tina Layton-Elliott BHSI
Tina and Queijada

Tina and her family started Contessa Riding Centre in 1977 and it has continued to blossom and grow ever since. Tina has competed up to Grand Prix level with her mare Pik Dame, who she trained right through the levels. The highlight of her competition career with Pik Dame was representing Great Britain in 2000. At present she is preparing Queijada for competition, a Lusitano mare owned by the daughter of Sylvia Loch of the Classical Riding Club, who wanted her horse to be trained by a classical rider who would be able to take her to her full potential.

Other important horses in Tina's Dressage career have been Borrowdale (Buster to his friends) who introduced Tina to Grand Prix competition, Karleton Quartz - an inexpensive Anglo-Arab bought to bring on and sell, who ended up competing to Prix St. Georges with Tina, then training a great many students in the advanced movements, Lanzo (also bought to sell, but ended up staying!) with whom Tina competed to advanced level nationally, and who has introduced a few lucky members of staff to advanced competition.
As an Instructor and trainer, Tina has coached a huge number of riders, encouraging them all to work with their horse to achieve harmony and balance in the classical method. She has trained a great many students through their riding and teaching exams to the highest levels, including the dressage section of the BHS Fellowship. She was previously a BHS examiner, and currently examines for the ABRS to their ATD Exam - the top exam that they offer. Tina is also a UKCC level 3 Tutor in Sport, NVQ A1 assessor and a BHS Riding and Road Safety trainer and examiner.
Tina has been training with Arthur Kottas, former First Chief Rider of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, for over 20 Years. Tina goes to the TTT in Guildford several times a year to train with Arthur and is regularly asked to perform in their lecture/demonstrations. Tina has also been training with John Bowen since 1993. This gives a great deal of continuity to the training, which is passed on to her students. John gives clinics at Contessa every two months.
In 2001 Tina made her own addition to the Layton clan with her son Zak. Tina would love for Zak to follow in her footsteps, but although he enjoys riding he is more interested in the quad bike at present.

Jade Rouchy BSc Equine Management, AI Technician, ABRS TC, BHS Int SM
Jade and Regitse

Jade started riding at 12, but had to go straight on to horses as she was too tall for the ponies! At 17, she got a horse on loan and then spent time working on a yard, where she backed ad bought her first horse, Chesney. Jade then went on to get a BSc in Equine Management from the University of Ulster, studying at Enniskillen. After her degree, Jade trained in Spain for six months.
After three years at Contessa, Jade has converted completely from Eventing to Dressage and tries not to leave the ground where possible! She has taken part in many clinics and demos and has been out competing with Marcus. Last year she was awarded the Jeffress Trust Scholarship for Instructors and achieved the ABRS Teaching Certificate. This year, she was a Golden Spur finalist and achieved her BHS Intermediate Stable Manager. As Office Manager Jade is also an integral part of the day to day running of Contessa.

Amy Wright ABRS TC
Amy with Tommy and Tessa

Amy learnt to ride at the age of 6 right here at Contessa. Amy and Contessa’s very own Tessa made a winning combination at many competitions both in dressage and jumping often beating the adults. Amy continued with weekly lessons and would spend most of her school holidays attending pony days and after finishing her A levels she became a working pupil at Contessa. In 2005 Amy was promoted to Yard Manager following a short break to have her first son Tommy, who now rides Tessa and son number 2, Joey, born in 2008 will no doubt ride her too.
Amy has helped with the training of many horses at Contessa but one in particular was Jaya. Amy was given the opportunity to back Jaya as a three year old and since then they have taken part in many clinics and demos together. In 2010 they won the Contessa Dressage Championships and were placed second in their first outside competition.
Amy was awarded the Jeffress trust scholarship in 2006 and holds her ABRS Teaching Certificate. As Yard manager Amy plays an important role in the day to day running of the yard and training of Contessa students. Amy established and still runs the Contessa Pony Club and assists with the training of the Contessa Vaulting Team.
